Wall Cracks – Not All Of Them Are A Tape Problem For Plasterboard Drywall Tape

 

 

You see a crack. First reaction: "The joint tape failed."

 

Maybe. Maybe not.

 

Standard joint tape has one job: to hold the seam between two drywall panels. It does that very well. But it's not a magic cure for every crack in the wall. plasterboard drywall tape is professionally designed only for seam splicing, and it cannot eliminate cracks caused by structural and wall base problems.

 

Two very different kinds of cracks

Type 1 – A straight line right down a seam

That's a joint crack. It runs exactly where two drywall sheets meet. This is what your tape is supposed to handle. If it cracked there, something went wrong – poor installation, bad compound, or maybe the house moved more than expected. Fix it by re‑taping that seam.

 

Type 2 – Random cracks, spiderwebs, or a pattern across the whole wall

That's not a joint crack. Those are called "check cracks" or "map cracking." They happen when the drywall itself gets stressed – maybe from the framing shrinking, the foundation settling, or a heavy impact. Your tape isn't involved at all. The crack is in the board, not the seam.

 

Why your tape can't fix random wall cracks

Joint tape is strong in tension along its length, but it's only a couple of inches wide. It can't hold together a 4x8 sheet of drywall that's cracking in the middle. That's like trying to fix a broken windshield with a piece of scotch tape. Wrong tool for the job.

How to tell the difference

 

Run your finger along the crack. Does it follow a straight line where two panels should meet? That's a seam crack – tape territory.

 

Is it jagged, curved, or branching? That's a board crack – not your tape's fault.

 

Shine a light across the wall. If you see a raised ridge or a visible tape outline, that's a seam issue. If you just see a thin line with no bump, it's probably a board crack.

 

What to do about random wall cracks

For a single hairline crack in the middle of a sheet, you can usually dig it out slightly with a knife, fill with compound, sand, and paint. That's a quick patch. But if cracks keep appearing all over the room, you've got a deeper problem – framing movement, moisture swings, or poor drywall installation. No amount of tape will stop those.

 

The bottom line

Joint tape is a specialist. It does one thing extremely well – bridging drywall seams. Don't expect it to solve every crack in the house. And don't blame the tape when a board cracks right through the middle. That's not its fight.Know the difference, and you'll waste a lot less time chasing the wrong fix.
