Epoxy Floor Delamination Repair: Using Self Adhesive Drywall Paper Tape As A “Stress Relief Layer”

Delamination of epoxy floors is a common issue caused by repeated heavy forklift traffic, thermal shrinkage of the concrete substrate, or excessive moisture content during initial installation. At its core, delamination occurs when interface stress concentration exceeds the bond strength between the coating and the substrate – the epoxy layer cannot accommodate the substrate's movement, leading to separation at the interface.
Conventional repair methods typically involve local removal and recoating, but this creates a new stress interface between the repaired area and the fresh coating, making re‑delamination highly likely in the short term. Introducing Self-Adhesive Fiberglass Tape as a "stress relief layer" is the key solution to this problem. Made of fiberglass mesh coated with a pressure‑sensitive adhesive, this tape offers high tensile strength (up to 700N/50mm) and excellent self‑adhesion. Its core function is to distribute concentrated interfacial stress evenly over a larger area through the mesh structure, creating a flexible buffer between the epoxy repair layer and the substrate rather than a rigid confrontation.
Construction procedure:
1. Substrate preparation – Completely remove the delaminated area until a solid cement base is exposed, and clean away all dust, oil, and standing water. Cut V‑shaped grooves along the edges of the repair area to a depth of 8–12mm, removing any loose material.
2. Apply primer – Evenly coat the repair area with epoxy penetrating primer to fully penetrate and reinforce the substrate.
3. Apply the stress relief layer – Lay the Self-Adhesive Fiberglass Tape along the centre line of the repair area, covering the entire repair surface and extending at least 50mm beyond it on all sides. Use a squeegee to press firmly from the centre outward, ensuring full contact with the substrate and no air bubbles.
4. Layered repair – Apply epoxy repair mortar over the tape in 2–3 layers, each layer being 1–2 mm thick, allowing the previous layer to become tack‑free before applying the next. Finally, roll on the topcoat to match the surrounding floor colour.
5. Curing – Allow at least 48 hours of curing at ambient temperature, during which no foot traffic or equipment loading is permitted.
The core advantages of using Self-Adhesive Fiberglass Tape as a stress relief layer are threefold: first, the self‑adhesive property eliminates the need for pre‑coating adhesives as required by conventional fiberglass cloth, making application fast and efficient; second, the fiberglass mesh structure creates a dual effect of "mechanical anchoring + flexible buffering" between the repair layer and the substrate; third, its excellent alkali resistance and low elongation enable long‑term resistance to repeated substrate movement without failure.
