How to Install Different Types of Corner Beads: A Step-by-Step Guide

In our previous article, we explored different types of corner protection strips. Now, let's dive into the installation methods for corner bead.

Typically, corner bead installation occurs after taping, though some drywall finishers prefer to install it first. It ultimately depends on your preference. Here's how to install various types of corner bead:

Metal Corner Bead
Positioning: Place the metal corner bead in the center of the corner, ensuring it covers both sides of the drywall evenly.
Securing: Use a staple gun, pneumatic stapler, screw gun, or nail gun to attach the corner bead. Staple along the ribbed edges, avoiding the center, to maintain the corner's sharp look.
Coating: Once installed, apply three layers of joint compound for a complete finish. Plan accordingly for supplies and time.

Preparation: Coat the drywall corner with a thick layer of taping mud, covering the entire length of the corner.
Alignment: Align the corner bead with the corner's center and press it firmly into the mud.
Securing: Use a corner roller tool to roll over the center of the corner bead, securing it to the wall and squeezing out any excess mud.
Final Coating: Wipe away excess mud and apply a layer of taping compound over the paper tape. Allow it to dry fully before applying the next coat.

Preparation: Again, coat the drywall corner with a thick layer of taping mud.
Alignment: Press the corner bead firmly into the mud, aligning it with the corner's center.
Cleaning: Use a drywall knife to wipe away excess mud.
Final Coating: Wait for the corner bead to dry before applying a thin layer of taping compound.
Vinyl Corner Bead
Adhesive Application: Spray the drywall corner with adhesive, ensuring full coverage.
Vinyl Preparation: Spray the inside of the vinyl corner bead.
Attachment: Press the vinyl corner bead firmly into the drywall corner for several seconds to secure it.
Securing: Use a staple gun with T50 staples to attach the vinyl. Since vinyl is thinner than metal, use smaller staples to avoid punching through.
Coating: After securing, begin coating. Vinyl typically requires one or two coats of mud.
