The Art Of Three Coats – Embed, Level, Feather For Plasterboard Paper Jointing Tape
Leave a message

You bedded the tape. No bubbles, no starved spots. Good.
Now don't mess it up by trying to finish everything in one coat.
Here's the truth: a perfect paper tape joint takes three coats. Each one has a job. Skip a coat or rush the drying, and you'll see every mistake through the paint.
Coat 1 – Embed the tape
This one you already did. You spread compound on the seam, pressed the paper tape in, and squeezed out just enough mud to leave a thin layer underneath. Let it dry completely. Overnight is best. Don't sand it yet – just knock off any ridges with a clean knife.
Coat 2 – Level the seam
Now you're filling the shallow dip left by the tape. Use a wider knife – 6 to 10 inches. Spread compound smoothly over the tape, extending about an inch past each edge. You're not trying to hide the tape completely. You're just building it up so the seam starts to disappear. Let this coat dry overnight again. Then sand lightly with 120‑grit sandpaper or a sanding sponge. Don't dig into the tape.
Coat 3 – Feather it out
This is the magic coat. Switch to a 10‑ to 12‑inch knife. Spread a very thin layer of compound that starts at the center and tapers to nothing about 6 to 8 inches on each side of the seam. The edge should be so thin you can't feel it with your finger. Dry overnight. Sand with 150‑grit or 180‑grit – fine enough to leave a smooth finish, coarse enough to knock down any lines.
Why three coats? Why not two heavy ones?
Because thick coats crack when they dry. And they shrink unevenly, pulling the tape and leaving a visible bump. Three thin coats give you control. Each layer dries fast and flat. The final feather edge blends into the drywall like it was never there.
One more thing – don't rush drying
Every coat needs at least 12‑24 hours depending on humidity and temperature. If you sand a coat that's still wet underneath, you'll tear the paper tape or pull up fuzz. Be patient. Good drywall finishing isn't fast. It's just done right.
So remember: embed, level, feather. Three coats, three knives, two grits of sandpaper. Do it like that, and your seams will disappear under paint – no bumps, no cracks, no callbacks. Follow this professional workflow to get flawless results every time with plasterboard paper jointing tape.
