When grain moves against the interior walls of a silo-whether during filling, settling, or discharge-it generates both lateral pressure and vertical frictional forces. Over time, these repeated stresses cause the concrete surface to develop fine cracks, commonly known as "crazing" or "map cracking." This is where alkali resistant reinforcing mesh provides a practical and cost‑effective solution.

 

The core problem is that ordinary reinforced concrete has very low tensile strength. Under the cyclic action of grain friction and pressure, micro‑cracks form and gradually propagate, compromising the structural integrity and durability of the silo. When embedded in a cementitious or polymer‑modified mortar layer on the silo interior wall, alkali resistant reinforcing mesh acts as distributed reinforcement-effectively functioning as "soft steel reinforcement." Its high tensile strength (typically 400–800 N/50mm) and excellent alkali resistance allow it to absorb and disperse the tensile stresses generated by grain friction, preventing them from concentrating at any single point and causing visible cracking. The mesh also offers good abrasion resistance, making it durable enough to withstand the continuous wear from grain movement.

 

For silo owners and contractors, proper installation is critical to achieving long‑term performance. The surface must be clean, sound, and free of dust or loose material. A thin layer of polymer‑modified mortar should be applied first, and the mesh should be firmly embedded into the wet mortar using a trowel, with adjacent sheets overlapped by 10–15 cm at all joints. After embedding, a second mortar layer is applied to fully cover the mesh, ensuring complete encapsulation. The curing process should be protected from rapid drying to prevent shrinkage cracks in the mortar itself.

 

When installed correctly, alkali resistant reinforcing mesh significantly extends the service life of silo interiors by controlling the cracking that grain friction inevitably tries to cause. It reduces maintenance frequency, lowers long‑term repair costs, and ensures the structural reliability of grain storage facilities over decades of service.
