Its Achilles' heel: water. Made from natural wood pulp fibers, it relies on countless hydrogen bonds between fibers for its impressive dry strength – over 6.98 kN/m. But when water enters the scene, it acts like a lock pick, slipping between the fibers and breaking those bonds. The result: wet strength drops by roughly half. Worse, in damp, poorly ventilated spaces, the starches and cellulose in it become a feast for mold. Black spots appear, musty smells develop, and eventually it rots away. That's why it should never be used in bathrooms, basements, or any consistently wet area.

Mesh tape's Achilles' heel: pattern show‑through. Woven from alkali‑resistant fiberglass, mesh tape is naturally waterproof and mold‑resistant, with tensile strength far exceeding that of it. But it has a frustrating built‑in flaw – its open mesh structure. If the topcoat of joint compound is applied too thin (say, just a single skim coat), the grid pattern telegraphs through the paint after drying. Under glancing light, a clear "net" becomes visible on the wall. This isn't poor workmanship – it's physics. The mesh voids must be completely filled to disappear. The fix is simple: apply at least two coats of compound with a total thickness of 1.5mm or more, and sand smooth.

In summary: In dry areas where a flawless finish matters, choose it. In wet areas where long‑term durability against moisture is critical, choose mesh tape. Know the limits of each material – that's what makes you a true pro. And when dry conditions call for a smooth, reliable finish, drywall joint paper remains the top choice.
