Mold needs three things to grow: moisture, a food source, and darkness. Damp plaster and accumulated organic dust behind the finish create ideal conditions. When mold appears in a distinct pattern-following crack lines or gathering around corners and joints-it often means the reinforcement was missing or poorly overlapped at critical points. When the mesh cannot distribute stress effectively, cracks open up, water seeps in, and mold takes hold in the damp substrate. In most situations, simply refinishing the surface without fixing the underlying reinforcement issue will only lead to the problem coming back quickly. 

 

The Right Repair Approach

 

To permanently solve mold and water issues caused by weak reinforcement, damaged render must be removed down to a solid, stable base. Any deteriorated mesh should be cut out, and a new, alkali-resistant layer installed in a fresh base coat with proper overlaps-at least 100mm at all joints and corners. Only then should the final finishes be applied. This method seals off moisture paths and restores the wall's ability to flex as a single, crack-resistant system.
