How Protruding Screws Cause Drywall Joint Paper Blisters And Cracks

When a drywall seam cracks, the problem is often not the tape or the joint compound. It's a screw head sitting proud of the board surface. drywall joint paper performs reliably only when applied to a smooth, even substrate – and protruding screws destroy that foundation.

Many installers drive screws until they're "about flush" and stop – the head just level with the paper, or even slightly above. Their thinking: "The mud will cover it anyway." That assumption is exactly where seam failure begins.

The correct practice: screw heads must be sunk about 1mm below the surface of the drywall, leaving a shallow dimple. This isn't for looks – it's to provide space for the joint compound.

If a screw head stands proud, when you press joint tape across that spot into wet compound, the protruding head creates a hard bump under the tape. The knife rides over it, forcing the tape to bulge while the surrounding area is flattened. Stress concentrates at that tiny bump. Then, as the compound dries and shrinks – or as the building moves slightly with temperature changes – that stress point becomes the birthplace of a crack. The crack radiates outward from the screw and soon travels the length of the joint.

There's a more subtle problem: protruding heads are far more likely to be sanded through later. Once sandpaper hits a metal screw cap, the compound around it gets thinned down, and after painting, an ugly black "screw eye" shows through.

The right fix is simple: Use a dedicated drywall screw gun or a limited‑depth drill to sink each screw about 1mm below the surface. Before taping, run your palm across the board – you should feel no bumps. If you do feel a screw head, drive it a half‑turn deeper or tap it in with a hammer and dimpler.

A screw head is less than two millimeters tall – but those two millimeters decide whether your seam lasts two years or twenty. For a long-lasting, crack-free finish, always ensure a smooth substrate before applying drywall joint paper.
