Overview: Corner Wall Beading

Traditional metal corner drywall bead is tedious and time-consuming to install, and if not covered with tape, it can develop cracks along the edges. Fortunately, there's a simpler alternative that won't crack. If you're an old-school carpenter, you might have dismissed paper-faced corner beads as inferior, but trust me, once you try it, you'll never go back.

 

Step 1: Cut the Bead

Use tin snips to cut the corner bead to the desired length. For pieces running to the floor, cut them about 1/2 inch short to allow for baseboard coverage.

 

Step 2: Mud the Corner

Spread a thick layer of all-purpose joint compound on both sides of the corner and smooth it with a putty knife. Avoid lightweight compound as it doesn't adhere well. Aim for an even layer about 1/8 inch thick without thin spots.

 

Step 3: Mist the Bead

Wetting the paper covering helps create a better bond and reduces wrinkles. Lightly spritz the corner bead before applying it to the wall.

 

Step 4: Position the Bead

Press the dampened corner bead into the joint compound, ensuring it's centered.

 

Step 5: Embed the Tape

After positioning, wipe off excess joint compound with a putty knife. Ensure the tape is pressed tightly against the drywall.

 

Step 6: Use Staples for Alignment

Align intersecting corner beads at corners and hold them in place with staples to prevent shifting.

 

Step 7: Check for Proper Positioning

Ensure the corner bead slightly protrudes to allow for joint compound. Adjust as necessary and secure with staples if needed.

 

Step 8: Scrape Away Excess Mud

Remove excess joint compound before it hardens to avoid damaging the tape.

 

Step 9: Finish with Additional Coats

Once the first coat is dry, apply two more coats, sanding between them. Use 150-grit sandpaper to blend the compound smoothly.
